Mullett Center to host Red Wings-Blackhawks alumni game
If Ed Belfour is able to reach the Mullett Ice Rink, as expected, you can not expect to find it parked on the network.
The former NHL star of the Custom Blackhawks Jersey and others whose 484 victories rank third all time among goalkeepers, Greg Buchanan said he plans on skating out. Buchanan, himself a goalkeeper who is organizing an alumni game between members of the Detroit Red Wings and Blackhawks, would be squarely in the crosshairs on November 5.
Buchanan laughs about the potential meeting on the ice, but could have its own arsenal of familiar names that work to keep away Belfour. Former Red Wings Kris Draper and Darren McCarty, Mickey Redmond, Larry Murphy and Dino Ciccarelli is tentatively scheduled to attend the event, the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Former Blackhawks Wayne Presley, Denis Savard and Brian Noonan also try to make the trip.
Buchanan, who spent three years in the Red Wings organization in the 1980s, helped coordinate similar events in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, but moved to Pewaukee a couple of years ago. His daughter attends Hamilton High School, and is partnering with the arrowhead youth hockey and HHS Booster Club to help make the event a reality in the skating rink on the campus of the arrowhead.
"I felt they were good tie-ins, because you need a lot of help," Buchanan said. "They have a lot of people in the orginzation and a lot of volunteers, and both organizations have been great."
Buchanan said parents in Arrowhead hockey approached him first with the idea after hearing what he had done to help coordinate the games in Colorado, where his place could accommodate about 700 people. With capacity for about 1,200, the Mullett offer greater capacity, and if the rates of events as well, Buchanan hopes to also embrace other NHL Alumni bases, which could add Minnesota in the next iteration.
Alumni games are not uncommon throughout the country, but this would be a first in Wisconsin.
"I think as the Detroit Red Wings have the best alumni association on the planet," Buchanan said. "The Chicago right there with us. They came to the steamboat, and were interested in coming here without blinking an eye." scott darling jersey.
Buchanan said the players will sign autographs 50 minutes before the album drops, then play a couple of halves of 30 minutes. autographed game jerseys will be raffled away and at the event.
