Saturday was the first day of play at the World Hockey Championship in Toronto, ending a 12-year break, which saw the competition fade from existence after 2004.
In total, the two games were at the opening on Saturday slate. US met the European team, while Canada took home the Czech Republic on the night cap.
Team Europe 3, United States 0
Winners introductory Football Ice Hockey World Championship in 1996, survived the awful start on Saturday, as the United States lost to Europe 3-0 in the opening match of the tournament.
Gaborik of the Los Angeles Kings put Europe ahead just 4:19 into the game after a defensive breakdown sent new Detroit Red Wing Frans Nielsen in the American zone for the possibility of two-on-one.
With a quick centering pass Gaborik could redirect Nielsen's pass and beat his team-mate Kings Jonathan Quick in the US goal.
It was amazing, the opener for the loser in Europe, but Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times is already looking for a way to get the US head coach John Tortorella from the bench
